Description

Choosing your own starter is one of the bigger choices the pokémon games give you. A loyal
pledge for the quest at hand, and a mutual bond to last until the end. Like many others, the
fire mons were and still is my standard choice, and spelunking through Johto with a weasel
who could breathe fire and punch thunder is by far not a shabby pick.

Together with a team built from scratch by carefully selecting powerful allies throughout my
journey (read: whatever I came across first), no challenge became too great, and with the
elites defeated and the Kanto borders opening their walls, my Typhlosion remained by my
side as a strong centerpiece among my pocket forces.

Until I met a mobile blob of smoldering lava. In a grass patch next to the sea. At night.
Looking back on this moment, there are plenty of things why this encounter was weird, and
Slugma never was one of Nintendo's brighter designs, but you stop questioning such
matters when fire types are as rare as they are.

And just like with all creatures I "saved" from the environment, I later on trained them myself
to reveal their moves and evolutions. Slugma quickly made things interesting by learning
Flamethrower miles before my starter, but upon evolving, he took me by surprise by donning
another type: rock.

I'm fairly certain he didn't immediately beat my Typhlosion in terms of popularity, but as far as
first impressions go
, I liked him from the beginning. Or her. I've stopped looking for
gender differences ages ago.

But sure, strictly looking to what Magcargo has to offer, it ain't so much. Doesn't pack too
much strength, has two quadruple weaknesses, two regular weaknesses, and is slow as a
snail formed from rocks. Although that last attribute is coincidently appropriate. But despite
all of his flaws and weaknesses, maybe even because of them, his goofy appearance and his
existence which defies all of sanity has become burned onto the peak of my favorite list. With
no intentions of backing down.

He's a horrid pile of lava, stone and sulfur. But he's all mine.

This image was drawn as a part of my take on Aqua's Favorite Type Meme, this one is
submitted for the explanation behind my choice and to show it off in its original resolution
(press Download).

The first Shiny I ever got was a Macargo. I don't have it anymore because it was in Pearl and I never used it and sold Pearl ages ago...
I just remembered. There's a snail, the scaly-foot gastropod, that lives in hydrothermal vents that uses iron sulfides and calcium compounds to make a shell that can survive thousands of tons of heat and pressure. Lots of people are like, "that should be a Pokemon." But we have one already: Macargo! What if it could, say, Mega Evolve be like Steel/Fire type?
